Frederick Douglass’s Grandchildren, the 4th of July, and Musical Optimism

In 2020, NPR asked five decendants of the great orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass to read excerpts from their grandfather’s powerful July 5, 1852 speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July.” Please click on the link below to hear these young people bring Douglass’s still relevant words to life.

Also, please click below to experience the musical joy – and optimism – of Kings Return. This brillant acappella group reinterpretes Optimistic, the song made famous by another inspiring group, the  Sounds of Blackness.
